GIUSEPPE MENGOLI

Italian conductor Giuseppe Mengoli was the first prize winner of The Mahler Competition 2023. Following this success in Bamberg, Giuseppe was invited to step in and conduct a programme including Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben with the Wiener Symphoniker at the Bregenzer Festspiele.

In November 2023, Giuseppe returned to the Bamberger Symphoniker to stand in for Herbert Blomstedt at very short notice, resulting in a critically acclaimed concert. He worked with the orchestra again in February 2024 for a Bayerischer Rundfunk recording production and conducted several concerts there, too.

Highlights of the 2025/26 season include returns to the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, RAI National Symphony Orchestra, and the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra, as well as debuts with the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, among others. Giuseppe will also make his opera debut at Teatro Massimo with their production of La Sonnambula.

Previous orchestral highlights include Rotterdam Philharmonic, SWR Symphony Orchestra, RAI National Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Bruckner Orchester Linz, Orquesta Sinfónica y Coro RTVE, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana Romande, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Philzuid, Bochum Symphony Orchestra, Bremen Philharmonic, and Opéra de Marseille.

Previous operatic highlights include Un Ballo in Maschera (Teatro della Fortuna & Teatro dell’Aquila).

Mengoli’s conducting career began as a result of his growing passion and deepening interest in the art of leadership, which he cultivated during his work as a concertmaster in both youth and professional orchestras from the age of 16. His boundless curiosity also led him to explore a wide variety of experiences, including the study of multiple instruments, acting in theatre productions, and performing with bandas.

He went on to work as concertmaster and assistant conductor with Oleg Caetani, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph König, and John Axelrod, with orchestras such as the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Boulez Ensemble, Sinfonica di Milano, Oslo Opera House, and the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla.

In 2018, Giuseppe made his conducting debut with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester in Bad Schandau. During this time, he also served as concertmaster of the GMJO and the Filarmonica Toscanini, and as a tutti violinist in orchestras such as the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin.

A winner of several international competitions as a violinist, he completed his multiple degrees in violin and chamber music cum laude with special mention. Alongside the violin, Giuseppe also studied percussion, piano, trumpet, and jazz, and he is an active composer and arranger. After finishing his Bachelor’s degree in orchestral conducting, he completed his Master’s degree at the HfM “Franz Liszt” Weimar with Prof. Nicolás Pasquet and Ekhart Wycik.
