STEFFAN LLOYD OWEN

Welsh baritone Steffan Lloyd Owen is a member of the International Opera Studio at Zürich Opera and was awarded First Prize at the 2025 Josep Palet Competition. In the 24/25 season his roles at Zurich will included Usciere Rigoletto, Silvano Un ballo in Maschera, and Hermann Les Contes d’Hoffmann. This summer he will make his debut with the orchestra of Welsh National Opera. 

In 2024, he made his role debut as Escamillo Le tragédie de Carmen at the Buxton Festival to great critical acclaim, described as ‘striking’ in The Times. Other roles include The Doctor in Verdi's Macbeth for Mid Wales Opera, Brenin in the premiere of the children’s opera Cyfrinach y Brenin by Mared Emlyn, and Guglielmo in Così fan Tutte for Opra Cymru. He also performed the roles of Sciarrone and Jailer in a semi-staged production of Tosca alongside Sir Bryn Terfel with the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. 

Concert highlights include Mozart’s Requiem with the Orchestre National de Bretagne in Rennes conducted by Grant Llewelyn and Beethoven’s Mass in C and Choral Fantasy as part of a concert with the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales and Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, reconstructing the historic Benefit Concert given by Beethoven in Vienna in 1808. 

Steffan is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music. His competition successes include the W. Towyn Roberts Scholarship Prize and the Blue Riband Osborne Roberts Memorial Prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.
