NINO SURGULADZE

Praised for her velvety timbre, striking stage presence and dramatic intensity, Georgian mezzo-soprano Nino Surguladze has established herself on the world’s leading stages in a wide-ranging repertoire.

Recent highlights include Amneris (Aida) at Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège and the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari; Suzuki (Madama Butterfly) at Teatro Real Madrid; Jezibaba (Rusalka) in Liège; Marfa (Káťa Kabanová); and Azucena (Il trovatore) in Parma and Bologna. She has also appeared as Carmen at the Mariinsky Theatre, San Diego Opera, New Zealand Opera and across Italy, a role that has become one of her signatures.

Upcoming engagements include Amneris (Aida) in Hong Kong and Catania, and Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana) at Teatro Regio Torino.

A graduate of the Accademia Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Surguladze made her debut with the company under Riccardo Muti and has since returned regularly in roles including Meg Page (Falstaff), Olga (Eugene Onegin), Idamante (Idomeneo) and Fenena (Nabucco). She went on to make early debuts at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Bayerische Staatsoper and the Salzburg Festival, quickly establishing herself as a major international artist.

Her career today spans Europe, the Americas and Asia. She has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opéra national de Paris, Teatro Real Madrid, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Glyndebourne Festival and the Arena di Verona, among many others. Her wide repertoire embraces bel canto, Verdi and French opera, with signature roles including Carmen, Amneris (Aida), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Romeo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Adalgisa (Norma), and Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana).

Equally at home on the concert platform, Surguladze has appeared with the Berliner Philharmoniker, performed Schubert’s Mass in E-flat at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and sung Dvořák’s Requiem under Nicola Luisotti at the Berliner Philharmonie. In London, she gave a Rosenblatt Recital at Wigmore Hall, performing lieder, arias and song, and she featured in the acclaimed live film of Rigoletto from Mantua conducted by Zubin Mehta, broadcast to over 140 countries. Her discography includes live recordings from Milan, Barcelona, Verona, Macerata and Glyndebourne.

Nino Surguladze has been honoured with the Presidential Order of Excellence from the Republic of Georgia and the Italian title Cavaliere della Stella d’Italia for her contribution to cultural relations. She is also the founder of the Desire Tree Foundation, which funds medical treatment for Georgian children in need through high-profile cultural projects.
