ANTHONY MARWOOD MBE

Anthony Marwood enjoys a wide-ranging international career as a soloist, director and chamber musician. Recent solo highlights include performances with the Halle Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Ulster Orchestra, Concerto Budapest, Boston Symphony, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, New World Symphony, London Philharmonic, Spanish National Orchestra and Sydney Symphony, collaborating with leading conductors including Valery Gergiev, Sir Andrew Davis, Thomas Søndergård, Andrew Manze, David Robertson, Gerard Korsten, Ilan Volkov, Jaime Martín, Douglas Boyd, Mark Wigglesworth and Chloé van Soeterstède.

Highlights of the 2026/27 season include two returns to Australia for collaborations with UKARIA, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Australian Youth Orchestra. Concerto engagements also include the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, St Paul Chamber Orchestra, East Coast Chamber Orchestra (USA) and Royal Northern Sinfonia.

As a director and soloist, Anthony regularly collaborates with leading chamber orchestras including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and Academy of St Martin in the Fields. In May 2026, he gave the world premiere of Christopher Cerrone’s newly commissioned Double Concerto for violin and cello with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and Coleman Itzkoff, returning to the United States in 2026/27 to reprise the work with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He also makes several appearances at London’s Wigmore Hall during the season, concluding his current series there.

A sought-after chamber musician, Anthony was violinist of the award-winning Florestan Trio for sixteen years and now enjoys close partnerships with artists including Steven Isserlis, Aleksandar Madžar, Alexander Melnikov, Dénes Várjon and James Crabb. His collaborations extend beyond classical music to work with actors, Indian classical dancer Mayuri Boonham, Irish singer songwriter Sinéad O’Connor, sculptor Nicole Farhi and South African guitarist Derek Gripper. His honours include the 2006 Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist Award, an MBE in the 2018 Queen’s New Year Honours List and a Fellowship of the Guildhall School of Music.

Many leading composers have written concertos for Anthony, including Thomas Adès, Steven Mackey, Sally Beamish and Samuel Carl Adams. He has new chamber commissions from Mark Simpson and Ana Sokolovic, and is making the first commercial recording of Rudi Martinus van Dijk’s 1984 violin concerto for the Somm label. He recently recorded Tippett’s Triple Concerto with Lawrence Power, Nicolas Altstaedt and the Halle Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Adès, for release in 2026/27. His extensive discography includes nearly forty acclaimed recordings for Hyperion, ranging from Beethoven, Schubert and Dvorak to concertos by Britten, Walton, Vasks, Kurt Weill and Coleridge Taylor.

Anthony studied at the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Emanuel Hurwitz and David Takeno. He divides his time between Sussex and Koringberg, South Africa, and is co-Artistic Director of the Peasmarsh Chamber Music Festival in East Sussex. He performs annually at the Yellow Barn Festival in Vermont and maintains close associations with the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne and UKARIA Cultural Centre in Adelaide. He holds the William Lawes Chair of Chamber Music at the Royal Academy of Music and teaches masterclasses at the International Musicians’ Seminar in Prussia Cove, Cornwall.

Anthony plays the 1709 Antonio Stradivari violin ‘ex Scotta-Kaulbach, Kempner’ (Cremona), on loan from UKARIA following a gift from a generous Australian benefactor, and uses a bow by Joseph René LaFleur.
